AAMD Educators' Survey Report - 2025

The American Association of Medical Dosimetrists (AAMD) Educators’ Survey was developed to assess the current state of medical dosimetry education and clinical training in the United States, with the goal of identifying strengths, emerging needs, and areas for strategic investment. Results reflect responses from 14 JRCERT-accredited medical dosimetry programs and provide new insight into national trends in admissions, instruction, workforce preparation, and program capacity.

Key takeaways & opportunities for action:

  • Expand clinical training capacity: programs overwhelmingly cite lack of clinical sites as the primary barrier to admitting more qualified students.
  • Support and grow the educator workforce: both academic and clinical programs need additional instructors, preceptors, and program faculty to sustain quality and meet future demand.
  • Strengthen program infrastructure: increased instructional staffing and faculty support are essential to protect educational quality and student learning outcomes.

URGENT NEED FOR CLINICAL PLACEMENT
OF MEDICAL DOSIMETRY STUDENTS

The AAMD Formal Education Committee (FEC) has acknowledged an urgent need for clinical placement of medical dosimetry students. The FEC is asking for medical dosimetrists to talk with their clinical leaders about potential affiliation with medical dosimetry education programs. Please contact the FEC Co-Chairs, Jamie Baker or Michelle Mundis, to discuss how your clinic can help with this critical issue.

Benefits of Becoming a Clinical Site

  1. Recruitment & Future Staffing - Experience first-hand a student’s clinical skills, work ethic and compatibility with the team. Create a pipeline of applicants.
  2. Collaborative Learning Environment - Explaining concepts to students helps staff enforce their own learning and stay current.
  3. Fresh Perspective & New Ideas - Students are aware of new trends and techniques, often passing them along during their time on site. They have more time to investigate system features.
  4. Applied Learning & Skill Development - Students assist with contouring and planning as part of their competency training. With this real-world clinical experience, students gain and enhance their treatment planning skills.
  5. Strengthen the Profession - Contribute to the future of medical dosimetry and patient care. Help reduce workforce shortage by training a future generation.
