It is noteworthy to mention that there are initiatives underway, as reported in The New York Times article and the ASTRO response, to create a national medical error reporting system and patient safety database for radiation oncology. AAMD President Melanie Dempsey, CMD, recently participated in the Radiation Therapy Roundtable with a group of radiation therapy clinical and industry leaders for the inaugural discussion about such a reporting system and database held by the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health. AAMD will continue to participate in this important project and keep members apprised of developments.
